Alcohol abuse and alcoholism cut across gender, race, and nationality. In the United States, 17.6 million people–about l in every 12 adults–abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent. Alcohol abuse is not something to make light of and to truly heal, professional intervention, medical care and a specialized treatment plan are required if the alcoholic is going to learn how to break the cycle of alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse in this generation is complicated by the use of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. The elderly spend over $500 million yearly on medications.
